Summer 2023 Update

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

The last few months have been busy for the project team and for the construction teams. Significant progress was made on the installation of the cable around the Broughton Archipelago, Johnstone Strait, Port McNeil and Port Hardy.

Crews on board the Ocean Destiny and the Western Princess are currently loaded up with cable and are hard at work installing cable from a landing site at the end of Fisher Channel (near Bella Bella), via the Canadian Coast Guard Addenbroke Lightstation, through Fitz Hugh Sound and Port Hardy!  We are all eagerly anticipating the milestone of landing the northern cable into Port Hardy.

While construction is ongoing the technical teams from CityWest and Baylink Networks are working on testing and commissioning of the network for all the cables recently installed between Port Hardy and Vancouver. These teams have to travel to each site, installing the final network gear and testing signals and operational components. Once everything is tested and commissioned CityWest is able to accept the network from our builder and begin its Quality Control work before lighting up the network as operational. We are all excited to start bringing more communities on line!

The permitting team has been working collaboratively with First Nations, Municipalities and the Ministry of Forests to permit the remaining network segments. The teams from Front Counter BC and the Ministry of Forests have been essential in the processing of the design and permitting.  We would like to thank those teams for their hard work.

The City of Vancouver has also shown strong support for the project, with the engineering reviews complete for the final connection into Vancouver designed so we can plan construction to make the redundant link into the main terrestrial network. With these designs in place we anticipate construction in downtown Vancouver to happen soon.

Please check in regularly with our build status map that tracks the installation progress on a bi-weekly basis! The coming months will be busy with many landing connections switching on!

Rural communities to benefit from increased connectivity to high-speed Internet

All Canadians need reliable and affordable high-speed Internet, no matter where they live. The governments of Canada and British Columbia are taking action to bring high-speed internet access to underserved communities.

Today, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, together with the Honourable Lisa Beare, British Columbia’s Minister of Citizens’ Services, announced over $3 million in federal and provincial funding for five CityWest projects to bring high-speed internet access to over 800 households in the rural communities of Dease Lake, Iskut, Lach Klan (Gitxaała Nation), Lax Kw’alaams, and Smithers, British Columbia. This includes nearly 500 households in Indigenous communities.

The Connected Coast Project team continues to work with communities, First Nations, and Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) to plan for future fibre-optic services.
